What actually happens during Igọ Mụọ? In this episode of Ndigbo Viva, Prof. Damian Opata explains Igbo traditional religious practice from inside the worldview. He discusses why moral uprightness matters, how certain spiritual functionaries are believed to be chosen, the order in which God, the sun, the land, ancestors and deities are invoked, the role of sacrifice, why ancestors remain central to the religious life of the family—and where he believes modern practice has been corrupted by fake diviners, greed, commercialisation and fraud. Prof. Opata also recounts personal and community experiences that shaped his own beliefs. These accounts are presented as his testimony and religious interpretation, not as independently verified evidence of supernatural causation. This programme is not an attempt to convert viewers to Igọ Mụọ or persuade anyone to abandon another religion. Its purpose is documentation, understanding and informed discussion. Igbo traditional religious practice is also diverse. Customs, terminology and theological emphasis can differ significantly between communities, so Prof. Opata's account should be understood as an important perspective—not a single universal formula for every Igbo community.
